Champions League 2024 New Format

UEFA Champions League 2024-25 to Adopt New Format

Expanded Group Stage and Revised Structure

The 2024-25 edition of the UEFA Champions League will undergo significant changes, with the introduction of a new format designed to enhance the competition's excitement and competitiveness.

The most notable alteration is the expansion of the group stage from 32 to 36 teams. This will result in four additional clubs qualifying for the knockout rounds.

Under the new system, known as the "Swiss system," the 36 teams will be divided into four groups of nine. Each team will play eight matches, facing four different opponents both home and away.

The top eight teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, which will retain its current format of two-legged ties.

UEFA President Aleksander ÄŒeferin expressed his enthusiasm for the new format, stating that it was unanimously approved by the organization's executive committee.

The decision to revamp the Champions League was made after years of deliberations and discussions within UEFA. The new format is expected to increase the number of high-profile matches and provide more opportunities for clubs to qualify for the latter stages of the competition.
