Belarus: New Vehicle Inspection Rules Take Effect
Stricter Requirements for Passing Inspection
As of January 1, 2023, new vehicle inspection rules have come into effect in Belarus. The changes aim to improve road safety by ensuring that vehicles on the road are in good condition.
Key Changes
- Tighter emissions standards: Vehicles will now be subject to stricter emissions testing, and those that fail to meet the standards will not pass inspection.
- More frequent inspections: Vehicles over 10 years old will now be required to undergo inspections every two years, instead of every three years.
- Additional inspections: Vehicles that have been involved in accidents or have undergone major repairs will be required to undergo additional inspections.
The new rules also include provisions for electronic inspections. Starting in 2024, Beltelecom, the state-owned telecommunications company, will implement an electronic inspection system that will allow drivers to schedule and pay for inspections online.
Enforcement and Penalties
Drivers who fail to pass inspection will be issued a warning and given a grace period to correct the deficiencies. If the deficiencies are not corrected within the grace period, the driver's license will be suspended.
In addition, drivers who operate vehicles that have not passed inspection may face fines or have their vehicles impounded.
Impact on Drivers
The new vehicle inspection rules are expected to have a significant impact on drivers in Belarus. The stricter requirements and more frequent inspections are likely to lead to increased costs for drivers, but they are also expected to improve road safety.
Drivers are advised to schedule their vehicle inspections well in advance to avoid any delays or inconvenience.
