Carey performs well in all-around final

Biles gives Carey pep talk before competition

TOKYO (AP) — Before American gymnast Jade Carey took the floor for her unexpected performance in the women's Olympic all-around final, she had some words of encouragement from teammate Simone Biles.

"She told me to go out there and kill it, and that's what I did," Carey said.

Carey, who was added to the all-around final after Biles withdrew due to mental health concerns, finished eighth with a score of 54.299.

Carey's performance was particularly impressive on the floor exercise, where she scored a 14.366 to finish fifth.

"I'm really happy with how I performed on floor," Carey said. "I hit my routine and stuck my landing, so I'm really proud of that."

Carey's performance helped the United States finish second in the team competition behind the Russian Olympic Committee.

"I'm so proud of my team," Carey said. "We all worked so hard and we came together when it mattered most."
